Potts Opens its Doors to New Designers

A North East print company will open its doors to designers across the region with a series of in-house tours throughout 2007 as part of an information sharing exercise with the creative hub of the design and print industry.

Potts, one of the region’s longest established printing firms, relocated to Nelson Park, Cramlington in November 2006, and its brand new premises now house a state-of-the-art print facility with cutting edge production technology.

The tours have been organised to allow graphic designers learn more about Potts’ investments in its pre-press, CAD, print and finishing departments and the techniques and associated benefits these will have.

Dan Tobin, sales director of Potts said: ’Following our recent move and investments, the timing is now perfect to invite designers to learn more about the technical process involved in bringing their creations to life. We hope that the visits will provide a greater understanding of the entire process behind one piece of work - from concept to reality.’

Dan continued: ’Potts has always been keen to add value to customers and by offering a research and development facility, we can offer constructional design, material and print testing all from one site. By sharing our knowledge and experience with designers we can ensure that both the creative and functional sides of the industry understand the vital elements that make the finished product meet the brief.’

Potts’ recent expansion has seen a wide range of high tech equipment installed at the 50,000 sq ft Nelson Park site, enabling the company to target its vision of doubling turnover to £15m by 2010.

Included in its wide range of new high tech pre-press, print and finishing equipment, is a CAD packaging design system and cutting table. This gives Potts a competitive edge as it can now offer designers a full prototype design and mock up service for both paper and carton board requirements.

Robin Owers, creative director and managing partner of PR and communications agency O Communications was one of the first designers to visit the Potts factory. Speaking of his visit he said: ’It is important for me to get under the skin of what happens once we send our designs to print but more importantly, is knowing what you can and can’t achieve when you are actually initiating ideas.’

’The visit gave me new insight into how the print process works - for instance the procedures in pre-press and print production, which is always useful to know so as to update clients on how quickly we can deliver their project. I was also very impressed with the new CAD sample making facility and the varied print and finishing techniques Potts can offer.’

Shaun Johnson, production director of Potts said: ’Our aims for these tours are to further increase our partnerships with our clients and streamline the process between design and print production, that will further enhance our reputation in the industry as a forward thinking and client focussed company.’
